In a way which promotes tag and release fishing, and gives individual anglers an opportunity to become involved in returning our stocks of finfish to health FISH Unlimited initiated the Adopt-A-Fish™ program.
For a ten dollar, tax-deductible donation, a gamefish will be tagged and released with a FISH Unlimited tag in the donor's name. Then the donor will receive a Certification of Adoption suitable for display.
When the fish is recaptured, and reported to FISH Unlimited, the donor will be notified, and sent a detailed history of the fishes travels since being tagged. This information can include such things as distances, places, growth rates, and the name and address of the angler who recaught the tagged fish.
The Adopt-A-Fish™ program is a perfect activity for families, clubs, schools or individuals who simply want to make a difference. The information generated will be made available free of charge to colleges and universities, with the hope that it will result in more effective fisheries management programs. In November 1997 FISH Unlimited
announced a campaign to educate the public about the plight of the vanishing
swordfish. Once an abundant sportfish in waters from the Northeast to the Caribbean,
the swordfish now is on the verge of extinction because of overfishing worldwide.
"FISH Unlimited is meeting with representatives of major grocery chains and
restaurants now, to ask them to stop carrying swordfish on their menus and in their
stores", stated Mark Ketcham of FISH Unlimited. "At the same time we are asking
them to post information on the plight of the swordfish so that the public becomes aware
of the seriousness of the issue."
Data now shows that almost 60 per cent of Atlantic swordfish caught today never get the
chance to reproduce, and if this trend continues, that by the year 2005 the swordfish will
be extinct.
"We want to help in saving this once great gamefish by getting major users of
swordfish to stop purchasing it. This way stocks can rebound, and responsible fisheries
management plans can be implemented."
